You start the day with a clear to-do list.
Then someone needs your help.
A team issue comes up. A difficult conversation needs to happen. Something unexpected lands in your inbox.
Suddenly, it’s 4pm and you’ve barely touched your own work.
Sound familiar?
That’s the reality of managing people. Your role isn’t just about getting your own work done. It’s also about supporting your team, developing individuals and responding when things don’t go to plan.
So how do you balance it all without your own productivity and wellbeing taking a hit?
That’s exactly what we explored in our latest Ninja Skill Booster, including the key idea of balancing the demands of Task, Team and Individual.
It’s More Than Your To-Do List
As a manager, your attention needs to move between three areas:
Task: What needs to get done?
Team: How is the team working together?
Individual: Who needs your support, feedback or development?
The balance won’t look the same every day. And when something unexpected lands, it’s easy to feel like you’ve been pulled away from your “real work”.
But managing people is part of the job.
A useful question to ask is:
Has this changed my priorities?
If it has, adjust them. If it hasn’t, it may simply need to wait.
There’s More to the Balancing Act
Finding the right balance also means knowing when to lead, when to coach, when to listen and when to step back.
It means knowing what to delegate, how to give feedback and how to support your team without taking everything on yourself.
And importantly, it means remembering that you’re a human, not a superhero.
Looking after your own productivity and wellbeing is part of being an effective manager.
